Toronto Photowalk – October 2023 – Riverdale Farm, Toronto Necropolis, Riverdale Park East

Photowalk details:

Date: October, 2023

What a difference a month makes! Just compare the weather evidence in the photos from my Toronto photowalk in September to the conditions depicted below.

Location: We met at 2 p.m. at the west gate of Riverdale Farm (near the bike lock posts). From there, we explored the farm and photographed the resident animals. Afterwards, we headed across the street to explore the Toronto Necropolis for its creepy vibes. Unfortunately, it was largely overcast, and the light was dull except for a short minute. Our next stop was Bridgepoint Hospital and its grounds, a mix of new and old architecture. It’s across the Don Valley, so we crossed the pedestrian bridge over the Don River and the DVP. After the hospital, we walked north Broadview Ave towards the top of the hill overlooking the park. The dull weather sapped all the cheer, and the typically bustling hillside was largely devoid of people. The sun was behind dense clouds, and we quickly gave up waiting to take sunset photos. We returned via the DVP bridge. Octobers’s photowalk didn’t have a theme.

Below are some pictures I captured during this photowalk. Most photos were taken with my Fujifilm XF 50–140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR and XF 16–55mm F2.8 R LM WR lenses.

Photowalk through Toronto's Riverdale Farm. Calf with green nose ring.
A calf with a spiked plastic nose ring. I suspect it’s spikey to discourage suckling from the adult cow with which it shares the enclosure. Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 50–140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Lens. 1/400 sec at ƒ/2.8 and ISO 320.

Same calf, different angle. Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 50–140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Lens. 1/400 sec at ƒ/2.8 and ISO 320.
Photowalk through Toronto's Riverdale Farm. Relaxing lambs.
Riverdale Farm has two enclosures for sheep. This is the southeast portion. I shot it using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 50–140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Lens. The settings were 1/210 sec at ƒ/4.0 and ISO 640.
Photowalk through Toronto's Riverdale Farm. Lone wooly sheep.
This perky sheep is in the northern enclosure. I shot it using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 50–140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Lens. The settings were 1/2500 sec at ƒ/2.8 and ISO 640.
Photowalk through Toronto's Riverdale Farm. Hens in the chicken coop.
Chickens in the hen house. I wasn’t going to take a photo because the light was flat, but I changed my tune quite quickly as the sun peaked through the clouds and illuminated this hen through the barn door. Focusing on this image was a pain in the ass. Even with bird eye detection autofocus turned on, the camera kept targeting the chickenwire. Eventually, I gave up trying to fight the camera and switched to manual focusing mode. Luckily, the light stayed bright. Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 50–140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Lens. 1/2000 sec at ƒ/4.0 and ISO 640.
Photowalk through the Toronto Necropolis. An ancient and severely weathered tombstone.
The sun was in and out during our stroll through the Toronto Necropolis. The scenery lacked lustre, but I spotted this dark headstone against a bright yellow tree. Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 50–140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Lens. 1/400 sec at ƒ/4.0 and ISO 160.
Photowalk through the Toronto Necropolis. Burst of colour from a tree.
I was initially drawn to the burst of colour from the two trees on the upper right. However, I couldn’t think of a feasible composition until I found the tiny fence curving up towards it from a narrow path. Still, the scene was challenging, and this photo is heavily edited to keep the intended subject the main point of focus. There’s extensive burning in the upper left and bottom right corners and the hedgeline. Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 16–55mm F2.8 R LM WR Lens. 1/50 sec at ƒ/8.0 and ISO 160.
Photowalk through Toronto's Riverdale Farm. Small flower in a scummy pond.
At the bottom of the hill upon which Riverdale Farm sits, just before exiting out to Riverdale Park West and its fields, there’s a nasty old pond with a tangle of fallen trees and green scum. Voila! Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 16–55mm F2.8 R LM WR Lens. 1/60 sec at ƒ/5.6 and ISO 160.
Photowalk through the Bridgepoint Hospital and Riverdale Park East. Abstract shapes and colours.
Just north of the front entrance to the Bridgepoint Hospital is a large concrete sitting area with several round rain and sun shelters that resemble flattened mushroom caps. This is them. Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 16–55mm F2.8 R LM WR Lens. 1/60 sec at ƒ/8.0 and ISO 160.

Toronto Photowalk – September 2023 – The Beaches and R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant

Photowalk details:

Date: September, 2023

Location: We met on the wooden boardwalk east of the Woodbine Park Fountain (Map Link). From there, we walked east towards the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant and explored the grounds. I pointed out the entrance to the so-called “old beach,” but we decided it wasn’t worth the risk of a fall or tumble to explore it. That beach is accessed through an unlocked gate with a huge sign barring entry, and explaining all the forbidden activities should you enter anyway. Afterwards, we walked back west towards Woodbine Beach West Dock and watched the sunset over the Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club. September’s photowalk didn’t have a theme.

Below are some of the pictures I captured during my first autumn photowalk in Toronto. Most of the photos were taken with my Fujinon 56mm F1.2 R lens, and some with my new Fujinon 23mm F1.4 R LM WR lens.

Muscled man on the beach in Toronto during September.
A fella. One of the photowalk participants was strangely preoccupied with how muscular this man’s back was. Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R lens. 1/4000 sec at ƒ/2.0 and ISO 160.

I’m mostly sharing this for the colours and contrast. I missed the more photogenic moment when she was reaching for the leaves a few seconds before this frame. Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R lens. 1/1000 sec at ƒ/1.8 and ISO 160.

This photo is confirmation that the photowalk kept to its schedule. We arrived at the location at just the right time. I’ve emphasized the yellow in the sky by increasing the white balance to 7500K. Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R lens. 1/2000 sec at ƒ/8.0 and ISO 160.

Toronto Photowalk – August 2023 – Harbourfront

Photowalk details:

Date: August 27, 2023

Location: We met in front of the bronze statue of Jack Layton on a tandem bicycle near the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal entrance. We made our way west from the Ferry Terminal, meandering along the waterfront and Queens Quay toward Ireland Park. Along the boardwalk leading up to Ireland Park, we saw an elaborate marriage proposal setup that featured a neon “Will You Marry Me” sign hanging in the centre of a large heart covered in white flowers and surrounded by white flower petals and lined by tea candles floating within clear glasses vases.

The theme for the photowalk was a single focal length challenge. It was meant to encourage participants to think differently through the limitations of a single focal length lens. Constraints can often spur creativity to capture stirring images. The photowalk was meant to reshape everyone’s perspective and unlock new dimensions of storytelling. Folks who don’t own a single focal length lens were encouraged to simulate the constraint by not zooming their lenses.

Below are some of the pictures I captured during the photowalk. All photos were taken with my Fujinon 56mm F1.2 R lens.

Hard plastic seats inside an old Toronto ferry.
I really enjoy the aesthetic and light cast through dirty backlit windows. This old Toronto ferry has a deck full of hard individual plastic seats. Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R lens. 1/800 sec at ƒ/4.0 and ISO 160.

More windows and reflections. This time the window of the upper bridge is stuffed with personal flotation devices. Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R lens. 1/500 sec at ƒ/4.0 and ISO 160.
Spiderweb hanging from bicycle handlebars.
The way I see it, there are two possibilities for what has happened here. Either the bicycle has been parked in this spot for a long time, or we’re dealing with a quick spider. How fast can spiders weave such a beautiful web? Shot using my Fujifilm X‑H2s camera and Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R lens. 1/640 sec at ƒ/2.8 and ISO 160.

Toronto Photowalk 5: Ontario Place and Exhibition Place.

Photowalk details:

Date: May 21, 2023

Location: We met in the shadow of the Princes’ Gate. From there, the group processed toward the old Ontario Place grounds via Trillium Park, and later, north toward the Rose Garden at Exhibition Place. We concluded the walk on the Dufferin St Bridge.

Since the theme I had originally envisioned for our April photowalk was abandoned due to the gloomy weather, I risked repeating the theme one more time. Fortunately, that gamble paid off! The afternoon was warm and the sun radiant. Ultimately, photowalk themes are mere suggestions designed to trick your mind into being more creative via artificial constraint.

Toronto Photowalk 4: Berczy Park, St. James Park, and Distillery District.

Photowalk details:

Date: April 22, 2023

Location: We met near the Berczy Park Dog Fountain. Our points of interest included St. James Cathedral and St. James Park, St. Lawrence Market, and Distillery District, where we grabbed coffee and treats.

The theme I had originally envisioned, Light and Contrast, was a bust. I was hoping that sunnier conditions would encourage folks to experiment photographically with the warm contrast of late afternoon sunlight. Unfortunately, the weather was dreary and overcast, more representative of late November than late April.

Some photos from the photowalk

I’m slightly embarrassed to admit that I only took two photos, and one of them isn’t worth sharing. I blame it on my state of mind. The weather was uncooperative and I was busy ensuring everyone was feeling welcome and enjoying themselves.

Toronto Photowalk 2: Brookfield Place to Nathan Phillips Square

Exposure Therapy’s second photowalk in Toronto.

I want to thank everyone who braved the chilly wind to join me on Exposure Therapy’s second Toronto photowalk. There were several last-minute cancellations, but enough people showed up to form a tight, well-rounded group. I hope for greater attendance as the weather swings into spring and more folks are willing to spend prolonged periods outside!
