Description
What you’ll learn:
- How shutter speed affects exposure
- How to use shutter priority (S or Tv) exposure mode
- How to freeze the motion of moving subjects
- How to make motion-blurred streaks of moving subjects
- How to choose the correct shutter speed for any situation
- How to troubleshoot camera shake
In-depth
This lesson will start with a brief introduction to the common types of camera shutters in digital photography and their strengths and weaknesses. Your photography instructor will introduce you to the shutter’s secondary photographic effect, the portrayal of motion. This course will empower you to decide which shutter speed is ideal for taking pictures of children, pets, or beautiful vistas. We will share tips for troubleshooting motion blur caused by unsteady hands.
The practical part of this workshop will guide you in applying the concepts learned in the former half of the lesson to real-world photography. Since the main subject of this workshop is shutter speed and motion, we recommend bringing a tripod if you have access to one.

The scope of our photography lessons
At Exposure Therapy’s photography courses, we focus on building a strong foundation in photography that will work well with most cameras. However, to ensure a consistent and positive experience for all participants, we cannot cover every feature of every camera. If you have an advanced camera and would like to learn more, we’d be happy to offer private photography lessons that explore those features in more depth.
What to wear
This is an outdoor photography workshop, so it’s essential to check the weather forecast and dress appropriately for the conditions on the day of the workshop. This is especially important on wet days, so bring weather-appropriate clothing to stay comfortable and protect your equipment.3To ensure the best performance of your camera during the workshop, we recommend bringing two or more fully charged batteries.
Meeting point and workshop location
Our workshops are held outside and involve walking to different locations. Please note that some places we visit may not be fully accessible.
In the event of bad weather, we may need to change the meeting location for the workshop. We’ll inform you in advance if this happens and will ensure the new location is easy to get to by public transportation.
